Eighteen airlines publish a warning about recruitment fraud on their own careers sites, or a plain statement that they never charge applicants. Several say the fakes are circulating now. Air India's careers site carries one: "Scammers are falsely claiming to represent Air India and are demanding money for job interviews and offers." Qantas says it is "aware of scammers posing as Qantas Group recruiters", and Wizz Air that it "has received multiple alerts regarding ongoing fraudulent messages which claim to be offers of employment from Wizz Air."

The eighteen are Emirates, Etihad, flydubai, Air Arabia, Riyadh Air, Air India, IndiGo, AirAsia, Singapore Airlines, Qantas, American Airlines, Delta, Southwest, Alaska Airlines, WestJet, Wizz Air, Air France and South African Airways.

No fee, at any stage

Thirteen of the eighteen say in terms that they do not take money from applicants. Emirates puts it most plainly: "Any job offer, seemingly from the Emirates Group, that asks you for money is fraudulent."

Others name the stages. Air India "does not charge any fees for job applications or interviews". Delta "will never ask you to pay money during our recruitment and hiring process - not for pre-employment screenings, applications or anything else." South African Airways "will never request payment at any stage of the recruitment process."

IndiGo's list is the most specific. Its careers site tells applicants not to pay "any fee for interview registration, application process, uniform, etc." and not to pay "any fee for offer confirmation, any training charges or joining deposits."

The promise runs past the offer. Emirates "will never ask for advance payment from you towards travel expenses or visas/work permits if your application is successful."

One airline marks where the rule stops. Southwest says it "will never ask for payment or personal financial information during the hiring process or training", and the sentence ends in an asterisk. The footnote says there is no cost to apply to its Destination 225° pilot pathway, "however, candidates advancing through the selection process will be responsible for all costs incurred." Southwest says so on its own careers site.

Bank details, cards and passwords

In flydubai's description, the fake offers "often look legitimate and may include job descriptions, salary, and benefit details. The offers then direct recipients to provide bank account details." flydubai "does not send emails, letters or other messages requesting your bank account details in order to process documents."

Others say the same in their own words. Emirates: "Never transfer funds, handover cash or provide your bank account or credit card details as part of a job application." Etihad "will never ask for personal information, bank details, or payment during the recruitment process." Riyadh Air "would never request any payments or personal bank details during the application process." Air Arabia "does not request bank account details". WestJet will not "request personal information beyond what is required for a resume (i.e. social insurance number, banking information)."

Emirates is the only one whose recruitment warning mentions login details. It warns that impersonators may "contact candidates and new joiners to request sensitive personal information and login credentials to gain access to your careers account or onboarding portal", and says it "will never ask you to share your User ID, password, or any login credentials at any stage of the application or onboarding process."

Qantas keeps it short: "Don't share personal details or documents unless you're confident it's genuine."

Who writes to you, and how

Eight of the eighteen name the email domain their recruiters use. Delta: "All official recruitment emails come from @delta.com addresses." Alaska: "Official communication from Alaska Airlines will always come from an email with @alaskaair.com at the end." Air Arabia: "All official communication from Air Arabia Group will always come from an @airarabia.com domain." Emirates gives two examples, "@emirates.com/@dnata.com". Wizz Air lists every sender it uses, including its careers system's noreply@myhr.wizzair.com and cabincrewrecruitment@wizzair.com.

A domain can be imitated. WestJet: "Legitimate emails from WestJet employees end in @westjet.com. Some recent scams have come from similar email addresses."

Emirates also names the channels that make an approach likely to be fraudulent: "Should anyone approach you through WhatsApp messages, personal/public email accounts (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo, icloud, outlook, etc.), social media, or unusual links, it is likely fraudulent."

The fakes arrive by email, letter, text message, WhatsApp and the web. flydubai describes "e-mails, letters and SMS or Whatsapp messages", and Air Arabia the same four. Riyadh Air describes "fraudulent websites or links that ask individuals to pay monetary fees". Air France says fake offers "can currently be found on the web or received by email", and South African Airways that the scams "often include fake job postings, interview confirmations, and payment requests."

IndiGo says the people behind them misuse "the names of our employees", and it describes a fake appointment letter by what is wrong with it: one that "Does not have an authentic signature" or "Has fudged IndiGo logo and pictures". Its caution page also shows examples of fake offers.

Where the real vacancies are

Several airlines say where a genuine vacancy is posted, so that anything else can be checked against it. Southwest: "All official job postings are listed and should be applied to at careers.southwestair.com." American Airlines says of its careers site that "All applications will only be submitted through this site". Emirates: "Emirates Group job offers are only published through our verified careers website."

ITA Airways' Work with us page carries no fraud warning, but it names its two channels: "the 'Work with Us' page of the site and the 'Job Offers' section of the ITA Airways page on LinkedIn."

Two airlines say they never pass candidates to a third party. flydubai "will also never refer you to a third party to process applications or visas", and Air Arabia "will never refer candidates to third parties to process applications, documents, or visas." Two others say an agency does not change the rule. Singapore Airlines "does not request for payment or fees for the processing of job applications either directly or through its appointed agencies", and South African Airways "does not request for payment or fees either directly or through agencies to process job applications."

Most of The Skylane's carrier profiles link to the operator's own careers site. The open days calendar leaves out any recruitment event that charges an attendance, registration, processing or placement fee.

A real offer comes after a real selection

Wizz Air will "Never offer a job based on a CV or application without a thorough selection process, including a series of tests and interviews." WestJet: "All individuals who are successful in gaining an offer of employment from WestJet, whether directly or indirectly, are always required to go through a formal recruitment process, including an interview with a member of WestJet's talent team."

Two airlines differ on whether a telephone interview can lead to an offer. Etihad: "Interviews are conducted face-to-face or via video/telephone before any formal offer." IndiGo tells applicants: "Do Not accept any offer or selection confirmation email basis interviews only through telephonic medium and without any face-to-face meeting."

So a telephone interview is one of Etihad's published formats, while IndiGo treats an offer that follows telephone interviews alone as a warning sign. The rule that applies is the one published by the airline you applied to.

If you have received one

Three of the recruitment warnings say not to engage with the message at all. flydubai says fraudulent offers "should be deleted immediately and not responded to". Delta says "don't engage". AirAsia: "please do not engage or share any information."

A note on sourcing

Every quotation comes from the airline's own careers site, job posting or help page, read on 24 September 2026. The eighteen were found by reading, on that date, the careers pages that The Skylane's carrier profiles link to, for 60 airlines and six maintenance and ground handling companies, and any page they link to under a fraud or scam heading. Pages that refuse automated requests were read in a browser. Etihad's warning sits on its cabin crew job posting and Riyadh Air's on its job portal, rather than on their careers home pages. A warning published somewhere those pages do not lead would not have been found, so eighteen is a floor.

None of the warnings gives a figure for how many applicants have been targeted, or what they lost, so this piece has none either.

The Destination 225° exception is the footnote on Southwest's careers home page; the programme's own page, which it links to, describes the pathways. The Qantas reporting advice comes from the scams page its careers site links to.

These pages can change after 24 September 2026. Check the airline's own careers site before acting on any offer.

Nothing here comes from candidate accounts, forums or recruitment agencies.
