Ground operations and dispatch

Where a certificate is legally required, and where the interview is the whole gate.

Published by Legal Information Institute, Cornell Law School · read 31 August 2026

A wide category with one sharply regulated role in it. Flight dispatch has a certificate with published requirements; ramp, load control and turnaround are trained by the employer.

  1. Entry requirements

What a named publisher says you must already have. Most readers pass or fail here, and finding out on this page costs nothing.

    Ground operations and dispatch

4 requirements, all as Legal Information Institute, Cornell Law School states them.

    • Age, aircraft dispatcher (United States)

A person must be “at least 21 years of age” to take the knowledge test and “at least 23 years of age” to hold the certificate. The two-year gap is deliberate and catches people who assume the test date is the constraint.

    • English

An applicant must “be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language”.

Requirements can change. Confirm with the employer before you apply or travel.

  2. Selection process

    3 stages

Each stage carries its source where the publisher states one, and says so where none does.

Certificate, where the role needs one

For a US aircraft dispatcher the practical test is taken “with respect to any one type of large aircraft used in air carrier operations”, against the Aircraft Dispatcher Practical Test Standards.

  3. How to prepare

What nobody publishes: ask the employer

    • The dispatcher requirements above are United States law. EASA states operate flight operations officer requirements under different instruments, and Gulf operators frequently train in house with no external certificate at all.
    • Ramp, load control and turnaround roles have no published entry certificate in most jurisdictions. Their gate is the employer's own training and a background check, which is why this section is short rather than padded.
