Getting out

Taxis between the Paris airports and the city run on a legally fixed flat fare rather than the meter, and the RER B rail link needs a separate airport ticket that the ordinary metro ticket does not cover.

Ride-hailing

Private hire is legal in France but only on a booking made before you get in the car, and the regulated airport flat fare does not apply to it.

If you have

One quarter, and at least the fare is known before you start.

  1. The taxi is a legally fixed flat fare rather than a meter: 56 euros to the Right Bank and 65 euros to the Left, valid in both directions. Traffic cannot change the price and there is nothing to negotiate.
  2. If you take RER B instead, the ordinary 2.55 euro Metro-Train-RER ticket is not valid at the airport stations. The Paris Region to Airports ticket, 14 euros full price and 7 reduced, is the one that covers it.
  3. Many restaurants close on Sunday and Monday and serving windows are shorter than elsewhere in Europe, so a six-hour window that lands between services buys you a brasserie or nothing.

Local laws that catch crew out

France is unremarkable for most crew habits, but the identity-document requirement, the face-covering ban and drug enforcement on transiting passengers are the ones that produce arrests.

  1. You must be able to prove your identity by producing documents when asked, or within four hours at a police station. Accepted identification is a passport, a photocard driving licence, or other documentation provided by a government body. Do not go out with nothing on you.

  2. Covering your face in public places in France is illegal, with a fine of up to 150 euros. The Foreign Office states that this law applies to tourists.

  3. Illegal drugs, cannabis included, carry severe penalties including imprisonment and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling, and that explicitly covers transiting through airports, ports and Eurostar stations. The Foreign Office adds that French airports, ports and Eurostar stations have strong detection technology and that it is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers, so something legal at home and carried through CDG is still an offence in France.

  4. Be alert to the possible use of date rape and other drugs including GHB and liquid ecstasy. Buy your own drinks and keep them in sight.

Tipping

Service is already in the bill in Parisian restaurants; tipping is optional, only for genuinely good service.

The official tourism office is explicit: "The service charge is already included in the bill in Parisian restaurants so there is no obligation to leave a tip."

What to buy

Fashion, beauty and antiques; non-EU crew can reclaim VAT on €100+ same-store, same-day purchases via PABLO kiosks at the airport.

The categories Paris actually trades on are fashion, luxury and beauty: the big department stores (Galeries Lafayette Haussmann, Printemps Haussmann, BHV Marais, Bon Marche, Samaritaine) all run dedicated tax-refund counters, per the tourism office.
