What crew need on the ground

The busiest crew city in the Gulf, and the one where the gap between what is normal at home and what is legal here is widest.

If you have

One district, and the Metro decides which one.

  1. Immigration and the walk to the rank or the Red Line take the front off it. The RTA publishes no airport flagfall and no per-kilometre rate, so a taxi fare into the city is a meter reading rather than a number you can plan against.
  2. The Red Line runs straight out of Terminals 1 and 3, which makes Deira, Bur Dubai, Business Bay and Downtown the realistic six-hour choices. It does not run all night, so a late arrival turns this back into a taxi decision.
  3. In summer the overnight low sits around 29.7C, so a six-hour night stop outdoors is not the cool window it would be almost anywhere else on the network.

Neighbourhoods
  • Deira

The old commercial quarter north of the creek, with the gold and spice souks. The closest of the main districts to the airport.

  • Bur Dubai

The other side of the creek: Al Fahidi, the museum and the abra crossings.

  • Downtown Dubai

Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall and the hotel cluster around them. On the Red Line.

  • Business Bay

Offices and newer hotel towers immediately south of Downtown, on the same corridor.

  • Jumeirah

The low-rise coastal strip: public beaches, the mosque and the older villa districts.

  • Dubai Marina

High-rise waterfront with JBR and the beach behind it, at the far end of the city from the airport.

Local laws that catch crew out

Drinking in public, kissing in public and swearing are all criminal offences, including online.

  1. It is illegal to drink alcohol or be under the influence of alcohol in any public place anywhere in the UAE. The drinking age is 21 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and alcohol is prohibited entirely in Sharjah.

  2. Swearing and rude gestures are criminal offences, and that explicitly includes online. People have been jailed or deported for it.

  3. Zero tolerance on drugs. Possession of even a trace amount, cannabis included, carries a minimum three-month prison term, and airport baggage scanning is thorough. Some CBD products are illegal here despite being sold openly at home.

  4. Bring documentation for prescription medication. Check the UAE Ministry of Health rules on permitted quantities and permits before you fly, not after you land.

Ride-hailing

Both apps work and both dispatch licensed vehicles. Careem is the locally dominant one and is generally better supplied outside the tourist areas.

Staying connected

A visitor SIM is registered against your passport and capped at two per network, and an unregistered line is cut off rather than warned.

The rules are federal, not local, so they are the same as Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. The UAE telecoms regulator, TDRA, allows visitors to register a SIM on a passport, or on a GCC national ID for citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council states. Residents register on an Emirates ID.

Weather

The number that matters is the overnight low: about 29.7C in summer, so the night never cools down.

Dubai's own government media office puts the summer average high at around 41.8C, with overnight lows around 29.7C. The low is the figure to plan against. A layover built around an early run or a walk before report does not get a cool window in July the way it would almost anywhere else on the network.

Tipping

No authority publishes a tipping norm for Dubai, and the percentages already on your bill are not tips.

No UAE or Dubai government source publishing an expected tipping rate was found. Every figure in circulation is a guide's opinion rather than a rule, so none is stated here. Tipping is discretionary and you are not breaking anything by not doing it.

Out in Dubai

Eating near the crew hotels

Alcohol is legal in licensed venues and illegal everywhere else, and in Ramadan the daytime rules extend to your car.

You do not need a personal licence to drink in a licensed venue. Hotels, restaurants and bars that hold a licence can serve you, and most crew hotels do. What needs a licence is drinking at home, which is a resident question rather than a layover one.

What to buy

VAT is 5% and refundable over AED 250, and the authority's own refund terms are better than the government portal still says.

VAT is 5%. The tourist refund scheme has a minimum eligible spend of AED 250 excluding VAT per transaction.
